The Region’s Tough 3. The winners of the regional elimination are joined by the PICE officials and invited panelists in a photo opportunity.

A civil engineering student from the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISATU) is leading the delegation of Region VI in the upcoming 39th National Civil Engineering Student Quiz (NCESQ) after outperforming 34 other contenders during the Regional Elimination held at the DPWH Regional Office VI in Iloilo City on August 31, 2024.

With just a one-point lead, Adrian Agundo, a fourth year student of ISATU in Iloilo City took the first place in the regional elimination, followed by John Carlo Basit from the University of Negros Occidental -Recoletos in Bacolod City and Matthew Daevin Sendico from the Carlos Hilado State Memorial University in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, in the second and third places, respectively.

Based on the PICE guidelines for the upcoming grand finals of the NCESQ, the region is set to be represented by two grand finalists and one alternate. Thus, Agundo and Basit will be actively competing in the nationals and Sendico as reserve.

The competition is divided into three categories: Mathematics, Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Engineering; Hydraulics and Geotechnical Engineering; and Design and Construction. Each category has a set of four questions with graduated difficulties and corresponding time limits.

The panel of examiners for this year include Engr. Felemuel Bullos (chairperson), PICE Iloilo Chapter Board of Directors Member Engr. Reynaldo Asuncion, DPWH Assistant Regional Director Engr. Jose Al Fruto, and Engr. Joey Hallasgo.

The conduct of the event was co-hosted by the PICE Iloilo Chapter led by President Engr. Mavi Gustilo and the DPWH Regional Office VI led by Regional Director Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel.
